Get Organized - Judy's Blog
What Isn't Working?
Sunday, 15 November 2009 07:03
This week I had a call from a client who felt that one of the components of her system wasn't working as hoped. This client had progressed from keeping multiple scraps of paper and random notes, to keeping one phone log to capture all needed follow up phone calls so that calls could easily be returned from the road. In practice the notebook had expanded to much more than a phone message log.
What is getting in your way?

Author Dr. Daniel Amen in his book, Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, talks about killing your A.N.T.S. What are your ants? Ants are your automatic negative thoughts. Maybe you have experienced ants when your boss gives you a new project, you look at that pile of papers on your desk for the hundredth time, you think about losing weight or getting into shape. The ants are the voices in your head that scream "You can't do that!", "You are a failure!, You'll never be a success at that"
Overwhelmed?
Sunday, 18 October 2009 13:08
How many times do you find yourself feeling I am just too overwhelmed to do anything else? It is a common problem for all of us as we negotiate the multitude of requests made for our time and talents. We often succumb to fear, guilt and shame:
I am afraid I won't be able to
I feel bad that I didn't
I am so embarassed that I couldn't
These feelings often keep us from moving forward in our goal to get and stay organized. In my experience with clients, whether they succeed or not is largely a function of belief. If you think that there is no hope, why try? If you think you will never get organized, you are probably right.
Try to think of what life would be like if these burdens were lifted and you actually reached your goal. You can have friends over, you can find what you want when you need it, you can live with more serenity and peace than you have known in years.
For the next week pick one challenge that you have and make a goal related to that challenge...For example: I can't find my keys when I need to leave the house in the morning. Develop a plan about your keys: Put a basket or a hook near the entrance. Put up a sign "keys go here". Write a note and tape it to the bathroom mirror; "keys in basket by the door". As you enter the house tell yourself "keys go in the basket by the door". Once you have this established you can add other items to the list: your briefcase, your umbrella, your cell phone etc...

When Putting Things Away Doesn't Help
Wednesday, 14 October 2009 07:22
I have had a number of clients tell me over the years that what they thought they needed was someone to put their stuff away. When these clients hired someone to do just that, they were more lost than ever. Why? The process of getting and staying organized has to do with understanding the reasons why you are disorganized. Until you know why, you will continue down the same road that got you into trouble in the first place. You must also understand how your brain organizes and "sees" what you have. It is important to remember that the way to successfully put things in their place is to understand why you are putting something in a particular place. Once you feel safe that you will be able to recall where items are stored and progress can begin. This is true for paper, clothing, seasonal items or most anything else. I tell my clients all the time, it is not how I would store something, but rather how you should store something given your unique organizing style.
I would be delighted to see you on Oct 24 at the California Closets Open House at the Natick Showroom. I will be speaking about how to make your closet work for the way you think.
