Creative Containers Part 2

Last month the professional organizers at All Ways Organized talked about the use of three-ring binders to organize some of the papers in your home. This month, we will share with you creative ideas for using a variety of containers for storing your possessions, and decluttering your home.

  • A rolling shopping cart can be filled with the countless basketballs, soccer balls, tennis rackets and other sporting goods in your possessions. When you are done using them, the cart can be rolled into the garage and stored.
  • Under-the-bed storage bins can be used for out of season or hand-me-down clothing. Label the bin with the season of use and size of the clothing. You can also use this type of bin as a special clothing keepsake box for sentimental items such as hand knit items, communion or christening clothing.
  • Lidded cardboard or plastic storage boxes are perfect for infrequently used items, such as holiday items, out grown toys and cooking supplies. Label the boxes, and then store them in an out of the way spot such as your basement or attic.
  • Designate a basket or bin for unclaimed items and place it in an accessible location. Whenever you come across an item that is cluttering up your floor or counter, toss it in the bin. Once a week have each family member take their belongings and return them to their proper home.
  • Hardware storage organizers that are used for nuts and bolts can also be used for other small items such as doll clothing or craft supplies.
  • Plastic baskets with handles can be used for storing items that need to be moved from one place to another, such as cleaning supplies, office supplies or toiletries.
  • Pocket shoe holders come in a variety of sizes and have a variety of uses. You can use one for holding hats, scarves and gloves in the winter, stuffed animals in a child’s room, art and craft supplies, toiletries and car items if you hang one over the front seat.
