I had a horrible nightmare last night. I was walking alone and was entering a tunnel. When I approached I could see the streetlight from the other side. Then, once in the tunnel, I lost sight of the light and I thought I was approaching a wall. I realized I was quickly being overtaken by a large individual who grabbed me and robbed me. When I finished screaming in my sleep and awoke fully it made me think about personal safety and I want to offer you these tips.

1. Be prepared: Know where you are going and how you will get there. If it is a really unfamiliar area print the directions as well as entering them into your GPS. How many times have you lost your GPS signal and thought, NOW what?

2. It is also not a bad idea to have a paper map available as well. I know, I know that we are a digital leaning society these days, but double and triple backup can save you from disaster. I once tried to coach a family member to a destination over the phone and the GPS was of no use and no one had a map so we could figure out where our loved one actually was in relation to where we were. Luckily, we were reunited, but several hours elapsed before we got straightened out. It was very upsetting to all involved.
